I had my camera with me (of course) so that I could I film “Sheila’s Blues”. I’ve been using an archival clip in the rough-cut of her doing the same song, and now I can finally substitute it with my own footage. What a night, what a performance, such love on the stage!

Thanks to everyone who came out to support the film. What a positive, overwhelming response! We had a full house at Camera Bar, including Serafina! People were even sitting in the aisles. Most importantly, we received great feedback to put to use as we move forward. I’m going to take a week to absorb the feedback before hitting the edit suite with fresh eyes and ideas. Thanks, again, to the DOC Toronto organization for sponsoring the evening, the community, and to all those who came out to support the film. Feeling grateful!

Event Date: Feb 28, 2011 | 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM
Camera Bar, 1028 Queen St. W.
Toronto, Canada

On Monday, February 28th, please join us for this month’s DOC Night Out. Local filmmaker and DOC Member Elisa Paloschi will present a rough cut of her film about a renowned jazz luminary on the cusp of a creative block: “Embracing Voices”. Elisa runs Eyesfull, an independent documentary production company dedicated to making non-fiction films with social relevance which reflect the diversity of the human voice. She was a recipient of the OMDC DOC Toronto Mentorship at Hot Docs in 2010.

Following the screening, Elisa will engage in a discussion moderated by fellow filmmaker Ed Barreveld, designed to provide critical and creative feedback on this work-in-progress. Whether you’re a filmmaker, a jazz-lover, or simply curious, we’d love for you to attend and add your voice to the conversation. Register now!

The screening will take place at Camera Bar (1028 Queen St. W.). There will be complimentary popcorn and a cash bar open throughout the evening.

About Embracing Voices:

Renowned jazz luminary Jane Bunnett, Juno award winner, Grammy nominee, recipient of the Order of Canada, came back from the brink, as she struggled with depression and the resulting creative block to win the 2009 Juno for best contemporary Jazz record. From Toronto, to Cuba, to northern Ontario to the Canadian Rockies, this intimate personal journey follows Jane as she faces the prospect of never making music again. As Jane contemplates growing old as an artist and as a woman, she nonetheless retains her childlike curiosity for life.

About DOC Night Out:

DOC Night Out is a casual monthly screening series and meet up for DOC Toronto Members and Non-Members alike. An amalgamation of our past programs’ “DOC Salon”, “Rough Cuts” and our informal monthly pub gatherings, this screening series offers DOC Toronto members the opportunity to screen and discuss their work with their peers. Whether it’s something that needs to be workshopped before locking picture, a pressing social-issue doc, or a great film that’s just begging to be pulled off the shelf, DOC Night Out provides a casual and open social space to talk about our work!

DOC Night Out is hosted at Camera Bar, Toronto’s premier lounge, screening room, gallery venue, and Gold Sponsor of DOC Toronto. Members of our organization receive discounted rates on theatre rentals – contact allie@doctoronto.ca for details.
